Introduction to Titus and the Doctrine of Election

On Sunday, July 12, 2026, we began a new sermon series through the book of Titus entitled Healthy Faith in a Hard World.

In the very first verse of the letter, Paul introduces himself by saying:

Titus 1:1 (ESV)
"Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness."

As we studied this passage together, we noted that Paul understood his ministry as serving God's elect and helping them grow in their knowledge of the truth. This naturally leads us to consider the biblical doctrine of election.

For many Christians, election is a difficult subject. It raises important questions about God's sovereignty, human responsibility, salvation, and assurance. Because faithful believers have wrestled with these questions for centuries, the doctrine can sometimes become a source of confusion or even division within the church.

My desire as your pastor is not to stir controversy but to help us better understand what God's Word teaches. While there are aspects of election that remain mysterious, Scripture reveals enough for us to study this doctrine with humility, confidence, and wonder.

To help our church think carefully about these issues, I wrote a short book titled Conditional and Unconditional Election for our Romans sermon series. My goal was to provide an accessible introduction to the major views Christians hold regarding election, examine the biblical texts that shape those views, and encourage readers to search the Scriptures for themselves.

Whether you are completely new to the subject or have studied it for years, I hope this resource will help you grow in your understanding of God's grace and deepen your appreciation for His saving work in Christ.
