The 6 Tests of Christian Liberty
After two sermons concerning matters of Christian Liberty from Romans 14, the following tests have been developed to help Christians discern their liberties:
Ultimately, Christian liberty is not about asking, "How much can I get away with?" It is about asking, "How can I use my freedom to honor Christ, grow in holiness, and love others?"
Galatians 5:13 (ESV)
For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
After two sermons concerning matters of Christian Liberty from Romans 14, the following tests have been developed to help Christians discern their liberties:
- Is it Scriptural? — Does the Bible forbid it? Romans 12:2 (ESV) Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
- Is it Controlling? — Could it enslave or ensnare me? 1 Corinthians 6:12 (ESV) “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything.
- Is it Glorifying? — Can I do it to the glory of God? 1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV) So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
- Is it Edifying? — Does it build me and others up? 1 Corinthians 10:23 (ESV) “All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.
- Is it Loving? — Could it cause another believer to stumble? Romans 14:13 (ESV) Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother.
- Is it Conscientious? — Can I do it in faith with a clear conscience? Romans 14:23 (ESV) But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.
Ultimately, Christian liberty is not about asking, "How much can I get away with?" It is about asking, "How can I use my freedom to honor Christ, grow in holiness, and love others?"
Galatians 5:13 (ESV)
